When designing a Smart Home you must decide which type of home you want to create. Amazon, Google and Apple all support specific devices.  When you decide to purchase a device say smart lights be sure the device specifically says "Works with Alexa".  You should also determine if the device requires a "Hub". I always select devices that don't require a hub. Why complicate things? The device you select may have a specific app that lets you setup groups with  the location of each device. once you have completed that task you link to Alexa.
